For the second year in a row, the legendary local band the Shingle Shakers will play a reunion show in Columbia.
At least 18 of the 25 original band members will travel from as far away as San Antonio and Atlanta for the show, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Harpo's, 29 S. Tenth St., according to a news release.
Until last year's reunion show, the band hadn't performed in about 30 years. The group formed in the late 1960s under the name Banjos, Buckets and Brass, performing at venues including Shakey's Pizza in the Forum Shopping Center. It later played regular gigs at Village Inn, a popular football-weekend hangout.
Last year's show was a success, band member Larry Garrett of Kansas City said, with great reception from the crowd, which filled up the back room at Harpo's.
"The most interesting were the current students who wandered in from the other side of Harpo’s and looked at us like aliens," he said in an e-mail.
The core group of the Shingle Shakers included piano, banjo, trombone, trumpet, clarinet, bass and drums. But some nights the bandstand would be filled with various other instruments, helping to create the group's Dixieland/sing-along vibe.
