Shingle Shakers at 2004 Hunter's Moon Festival

weekend review

It was looking pretty bleak. . .the weather forecast for Kentucky called for rain all weekend. Those of us who drove to Kentucky from the west on Friday had to drive in the rain through Missouri and Illinois. But as we crossed the Ohio River into Kentucky the rain stopped, and we didn't get a drop the entire weekend.

We had an absolute blast the entire weekend at the Hunter's Moon Festival. The people welcomed us everywhere we played. The accommodations overlooking Lake Barkley were fantastic. The food was delicious. We played and played
--at Patti's 1880's Settlement Friday afternoon
– at the Commonwealth Yacht Club Friday night
-- in the center of the festival on Saturday morning
-- in the parade on Saturday afternoon
-- for a 1½ hour Cruise on the Belle of Grand Rivers Excursion Boat late Saturday afternoon
-- at the Lighthouse Landing Yacht Club on Saturday night
-- and at Mass at St. Anthony's Catholic Church on Sunday morning. Needless to say, the weekend flew by and all too soon it was time to leave.

Attached are a few pix of us in action. Thanks to everyone who made this event a great success. I'm looking forward to seeing the entire band, families, friends and fans at the 2005 Hunter's Moon Festival in Grand Rivers, Kentucky.

The Grand Rivers City Council met Tuesday, October 19 in a special session that was called to make up for the October 12 regular meeting that had been cancelled. Mayor Tom Moodie and four council members were present and while, during the public portion of the meeting, several issues were discussed and/or acted upon that should be of interest to local residents, the most unexpected event took place during the Executive Session that was closed to the public because it dealt with personnel matters.

The annual Hunter's Moon Festival is done but certainly not forgotten. The 26th edition of the Chamber of Commerce sponsored fall festival was surely one of the best ever if the post-event comments of vendors, visitors and local residents are any indication. Perhaps the most popular features on Big Saturday were music by the "Shingle Shakers", the ceremony honoring our World War Two Veterans and one of the best parades ever.

The musicians were a group mostly from the St. Louis area but who also came from as far away as San Antonio, TX and who entertained with an "old time" mix of Dixieland, Ragtime, Blues, well known popular tunes and a patriotic medley that had the crowd cheering. A sizeable number of the veterans were seated in a place of honor directly across from the Welcome Center Arch and just before the start of the parade they were called by name and presented with certificates of appreciation and keys to the city.

The 3:00 PM parade featured many attractive entries but those judged as being the best were: Livingston Co. 4-H Club who won the $500.00 first prize, Kentucky Lake Sailing Club who received $250.00 for second place Red Hat Society ladies who won the $100.00 third place money.

The prize money is donated each year by the Grand Rivers Tourism Commission in the hope of encouraging folks to build better and more creative floats. A highlight of the parade had the Marshall Co. High Marching Band stop, face the veterans and play the National Anthem.

Capt. Patrick Moylan,

It was a great pleasure to meet you and to have the opportunity to listen to three hours of some of the best Dixieland music last Saturday evening at the Lighthouse Landing, as well as in the town of Grand Rivers square and in the parade.

We own a MacGregor 26 that we trailer several times a year from Hendersonville, TN, for six years now, to enjoy the friendly town, Lighthouse Landing staff, Irene's fine cuisine at the Lite Side, fellow sailors and beautiful Kentucky Lake.

During our breakfast Sunday morning, Irene mentioned that you had a CD of music very similar to that which we enjoyed so much last Saturday. I would be most grateful if you would permit me to purchase a copy of the CD if such is available. I hope that your band will continue to entertain many of us again, and that you might keep us informed of your next engagement, as well as any progress about a future CD of your very fine group of musicians.

I have enclosed a few pictures that I took during your visit last weekend. They are reduced in size, but full size, about 400K, files are available if desired.

Respectfully,

R** B****

About the Hunter's Moon Festival

The Village of Grand Rivers, Kentucky has been presenting its famous fall event, the Hunter's Moon Festival, each October since 1978. This four-day festival is held on the second weekend of October.

The festival kicks off on Thursday evening with the Little Mr. and Miss Pageant, with the winner riding in a special place in the festival parade. On Friday vendors of all kinds set up in both the downtown area and at other locations throughout the community offering arts and crafts, flea market and collectible items, specialty goods and food. The Grand Rivers Trolley provides free transportation from 4PM until late in the evening. All of the Village's permanent businesses will be open during the weekend for shopping, dining and services.

The festival goes into high gear on Saturday with live entertainment at the Visitor Welcome Center (2004 featured the Shingle Shakers), children's activities, the famous "Taste of the Lakes" where local restaurants offer their specialties and the "Big Parade" (including the Shingle Shakers) at 2PM. There is also a Halloween costume contest for children, a silent auction and other activities culminating in the final Street Dance of the season.
