FKA The Shingle Shakers, Banjos, Buckets and Brass, Dixieland Rascals
Anyone who lived, worked or attended school in Columbia, Missouri in the late 60's and early 70's knew where the biggest party in town could be found every weekend--especially football weekends.
It was at a pizza place on the East side of Columbia called the Village Inn. In fact, the evenings were so jam-packed and raucous that the "V-I", as it was called, rated a mention in Sports Illustrated in an article discussing Mizzou football. It was wall to wall noise and mayhem.
The band that played there was called The Shingle Shakers and they played everything from pure dixieland to swing to sing-along tunes and the Mizzou Fight Song at least hourly.
Four nights a week a variety of local players including students, professors, doctors, and the editor of the Columbia Tribune, filled out the band roster that changed every evening. The core group included piano, banjo, trombone, trumpet, clarinet, bass and drums but on any given night the bandstand would fill up with a tuba, washboard, saxophone and various other instruments and players sitting in for a tune or a set or an evening.
The Band is Back in Town!
The tradition of a dixieland/singalong band goes back to 1968, when a group called Banjos, Buckets and Brass began playing at Shakey's Pizza in the Forum Shopping Center. The group performed on a small stage in the corner of the restaurant which was edged on two sides by a wood shingle roof that gave the group its name.
Now, 30+ years later, many of the players who appeared with the group still get together for gigs in Columbia, St. Louis and wherever else they'll let us play. Thanks for joining us. Thanks for listening. And thanks for buying a pitcher for the band.
